PC problems

Ok i haven't been in game much due to work and playing star trek online but i have an excuse now
Basically my PC keeps crashing everytime i try and get into lotro, i managed to get on for a while this morning no problems, but when i tried to log on this evening (was hoping to help with bg raid) the game went through log on screen no problems then the screen froze and began breaking up went black and the the pc restarted going straight into the diagnostic startup screen .
Does the same with STO as well i log in ok then the screen freezes breaks up and the pc restarts straight into the diagnostic startup screen , pc is fine for everything else only crashing when starting a game , did a system restore to no avail until i get it sorted i won't be able to play (obviously).

I had a similar problem with my PC a while back. Sorted it by updating the graphics card driver. Might be worth a try? Alternatively you can give it a good kick. I will not fix the issue but it will make you feel better.

Ok turned out to be more than i thought spent most of the day trying to diagnose fix etc etc error messages point towards a graphics problem but i think it is down to more than that as time after time it would reboot straight into the diagnostics screen luckily i managed to back up my hard drive onto my external drive (so glad i bought it now otherwise i'd be screwed) in safe mode and have had to a full destructive install .
i had only recently downloaded new graphics drivers and they were fine no problems at all so can't understand why they cause problems now ?? so now looking forward to lots of time consuming updates to download

not going to be in the game for a while currently on my second clean install of vista my system is not stable for some reason i have no idea how long it's going ot take to fix if i can fix it at all !!

I had a similiar issue as well where LOTRO and Windows 7 would just hang for no reason and I'd have to power off and back on to get it to kick in.

I think all i did in the end was make sure all my drivers, windows updates where upto date and i've not had an issue with it since.

Have you ruled out hardware problems? Changed any kit recently? Got any spare bits laying about you can swap out to check?

A PSU on it's way out can cause this, or if you have multiple ram sticks, remove one and see how stable your comp is, then try the other.

If you keep getting problems try running Memtest 4.0 to verify possible ram hardware errors.

Ok after a process of elimination, several blue screens of death and 6 clean installs of vista i have traced the problem to the latest drivers issued by nvidia for my graphics card, which is a bit of a puzzle as i have been using them since they were first released in january with no problems at all (i have made no hardware changes since i put the latest graphics card in last year) .
I have installed lotro including patches for the second time but now lotro won't work as i don't have a suitable graphics card (according to the error message) , which means downloading a new set of drivers for my card so need to find an archived set of drivers released before the latest ones in the hope that they won't force me to clean install again
